IVP ASSIGNMENT 2

In this era where almost everyone is technology-savvy, one wouldn’t want to be caught dead without an electronic device. It is no question as to why you always see people fidgeting with their handphones, PDAs, or whatever new products that have been released into the market.

More likely than not, these devices are able to distract whoever is using them. May it be students or workers or even people on duty.

But the concern is greater for students who bring their electronic devices such as handphones, hand-held organizers and other gadgets to school. Somehow, these gadgets have the power to distract students’ attention; making them turn away from the board, turn to their gadget and start entertaining themselves; oblivious to the surrounding.

Isnt that just so wrong? Not paying attention. I may even call it rude since the teacher is doing a favour, teaching her students and the students show their gratitude by shutting the ears upon their teachers.

Still, a student’s life is not a life if their gadgets are not attached to them. It is not only a must-have item for the student but it is more like a must-have-and-must-be-with-me-all-the-time item. Some students have grown so attached to – say, their handphone – that even though the school disallow fancy gadgets to be brought in, they manage to smuggle it in.

And when there is a spot-check and a handphone is found with them, they will give excuses that their parents encouraged them to bring it to school to further enhance their communication.

Sometimes, it is not even an excuse. Some parents do feel a need to make sure their child are contactable at any time of the day. Like the ones said in the passage where the parents feel more at ease as they will be able to call up their child and ask about their whereabouts.

Still, the disadvantages of bringing electronic devices to school still outrule the advantages.

Dishonesty may be practised as students find it easier to cheat on tests juz by using text-messages. The no. of thefts may increase as these gadgets are able to lure thiefs. The high chances of a phone ringing in a middle of a class, thus, disrupting the whole lesson. The inability to stop text-messaging in lectures. The ridiculousness of ordering pizza when u are in a class (as said by the passage). And the list goes on…

Even though schools may ban the bringing of cellphones and other devices into school grounds, there is no confirmity that the students will abide these rules. Some students may even say: Rules are meant to be broken.

Thus, schools should allow their students to bring whatever devices they wanna bring. On one condition though: Students are to pass their electronic devices to the teachers at the beginning of the class and resume them back at the end of the class.

This is a win-win situation where the students are allowed the freedom to bring their handphones and they are also able to concentrate during classes; thus not distracted by the desire t hold on to their phones.
